The “Quarter Test”
Place a US Quarter (coin) over the damage. Is the chip/crack smaller than the coin?
Yes, it’s smaller
It’s a bullseye or star chip.
No, it’s larger
Or it’s a long crack spreading across the glass.
Is the rim bent or just scratched?
Look at the edge where the tire meets the metal.
Just Scratched (Curb Rash)
Ugly scrapes from hitting a curb, but the shape is round.
Bent / Vibration
The metal is deformed or the car vibrates when driving.
What’s wrong with the lens?
Hazy / Yellow / Foggy
Light output is dim, looks old and oxidized.
Cracked Plastic / Moisture
There is water inside or the plastic is shattered.
What is the specific body issue?
Rust / Corrosion
Bubbling paint or orange metal.
Dent / Impact
Collision damage or ding.
Scratch / Paint Chip
Surface marks.
The “Screwdriver Test”
Poke the rust gently. Does it feel solid or does it crunch/flake away?
Solid Surface
It’s just surface discoloration. Metal is hard.
Crunchy / Holes
The tool pokes through or chunks fall off.
Is the paint cracked in the dent?
Yes, Paint is Broken
I see bare metal or primer.
No, Paint is Smooth
Just a depression in the panel.
