Respiratory hazards
- Fiberglass dust: Airborne fibers lodge in lungs. Similar mechanism to asbestos but shorter fibers. Long-term exposure = pulmonary fibrosis.
- Epoxy fumes: Amine compounds. Skin sensitization on repeated exposure = lifelong reactions.
- Polyester resin fumes: Styrene monomer. Neurological effects, especially with poor ventilation.
- Sanded fiberglass dust: Especially fine and dangerous. Wear respirator during ALL sanding.
Required PPE — the minimum
- P100 half-mask respirator — NOT a dust mask, NOT an N95. Only P100 particulate filters stop fiberglass fibers.
- Safety glasses that seal to face — regular glasses let dust reach eyes. Sealed goggles are better.
- Nitrile gloves — changed every 30-45 minutes because epoxy migrates through nitrile eventually.
- Tyvek disposable suit — throwaway after project. Fibers embed permanently.
- Sealed shoes or shoe covers — fibers get in shoes and re-airborne when you walk.
- Long-sleeve shirt under Tyvek — belt-and-suspenders skin protection.

Is a dust mask enough for fiberglass work?
No. Absolutely not. Dust masks (N95) don’t stop fiberglass fibers. Only P100 particulate respirators are adequate.
Can epoxy sensitivity be reversed?
No. Once sensitized to epoxy, exposure triggers dermatitis for life. Prevention is the only option.
Is fiberglass work safe in an attached garage?
Only with dedicated ventilation. Fumes and dust migrate into living areas otherwise. Detached workspace is much safer.
How do I clean up fiberglass safely?
