Ford switched the F-150 to a fully aluminum body in 2015 — and it changed the collision repair economics of America’s best-selling truck forever. Aluminum requires certified shops, dedicated tooling, and separate work areas. Body repair on an aluminum F-150 runs 30-60% more than on the outgoing steel F-150.

Why Aluminum F-150 Costs More

Certified Shops Only

Ford requires aluminum F-150 structural repair be done at Ford Certified Collision Centers with dedicated aluminum workstations. Not every dealership qualifies. Non-certified repair voids your Ford warranty.

Separate Work Areas

Cross-contamination between steel and aluminum tooling causes galvanic corrosion (the metals eat each other over time). Certified aluminum shops maintain physically separate work bays, tools, and vacuum systems — a massive capital investment.

Aluminum Welding is Harder

Aluminum requires pulse MIG welding with specific shielding gas, and it work-hardens if bent too many times. Some aluminum panels can’t be repaired at all — only replaced.

Rivets, Not Welds, for Structural Joins

The aluminum F-150 uses hundreds of self-piercing rivets to join major structural pieces. Removing and replacing these requires specialized tools and often replacing surrounding panels.

F-150 Model-Specific Notes

2015-2020 F-150 (Aluminum Gen 1)

First-gen aluminum bodies had panel dimpling issues around riveted joints. Repairability improved with each model year.

2021-2024 F-150 (Aluminum Gen 2)

Improved panel design, easier disassembly. Still requires certified shop.

F-150 Lightning (2022+)

Everything above PLUS 400V high-voltage battery system, mandatory battery pack inspection after moderate collisions, and even fewer certified shops. See our Lightning-specific repair guide.

Raptor (all years)

Unique fenders and body flares are Raptor-specific parts — no cross-compatibility with standard F-150. Backorder is common. Insurance total-loss thresholds hit fast on Raptor.

Insurance Reality

Aluminum F-150 insurance runs 15-25% higher than the pre-2015 steel F-150 at equivalent trim. Full coverage on a 2022 F-150 XLT averages $2,100-2,900/year in 2026.

Should You Use Ford Certified?

For any structural work, aluminum panel repair, or if the truck is under Ford warranty — yes. Non-certified repairs on aluminum panels lead to warranty voids and, worse, panels that fail during future collisions in unpredictable ways.
